License Plate Recognition in North Cyprus: Car Park Guide 2026

How does plate recognition work and combine with a barrier? A selection and survey guide for complexes, hotels and car parks in North Cyprus.

License Plate Recognition in North Cyprus: Car Park Guide 2026

A license plate recognition system reads a vehicle's plate with a camera and automatically opens the barrier or gate for authorized vehicles at car park and residential entrances. In North Cyprus, housing complexes, hotels, business centers and factories increasingly turn to this technology, because handing out remotes, tracking cards and managing queues at the gate tires both security staff and residents. In this guide we explain in plain language how the system works, how it combines with a barrier or gate, what to consider in Cyprus conditions, and which questions to prepare before a site survey.

What is a license plate recognition system and what is it for?

The principle is simple: a camera at the entrance captures the plate of the approaching vehicle, software converts it to text and compares it with a list of pre-approved plates. If the plate is on the list, the barrier or gate opens; if not, it stays closed or alerts the operator. The driver does not need to carry a remote, tap a card or open the window to talk to a guard.

This setup is especially useful for:

  • Managing the entry and exit of residents and guests in complexes with many apartments
  • Defining guests and staff separately in hotel and apart-hotel car parks
  • Separating employee, supplier and service vehicles at business centers and factories
  • Reducing problems such as lost or copied remotes
  • Keeping a record of which vehicle entered and left, and when

License plate recognition is not a gate by itself; it is a layer of intelligence that commands the gate or barrier. Success therefore depends on the camera, the software and the barrier or gate motor working in harmony. In our barrier and plate recognition service, REKA treats these three parts as a single project.

Which parts does the system consist of?

Knowing the parts is enough to understand an installation:

  • Camera: The eye that reads the plate. If its position, angle and field of view are wrong, reading quality drops.
  • Lighting and protection: Needed for a clear image at night and against oncoming headlights.
  • Software: Converts the plate to text and compares it with the authorized list. Adding and removing users and entry logs are managed here.
  • Barrier or gate motor: Turns the software's command into physical movement.
  • Safety sensors: Photocells and detectors that prevent a vehicle from being trapped or hit.
  • Connection and power infrastructure: The wiring and electrical layout needed for uninterrupted communication between camera, software and motor.

Each of these parts requires a different expertise. A common mistake is to treat the camera as a minor part while spending most of the attention on the barrier; yet the weakest link determines the success of the whole system.

Tip: License plate recognition is not simply hanging a camera on a wall. The layout of the entrance road, the approach speed of vehicles and the lighting conditions should be examined on site during the survey.

Barrier, automatic gate, or both?

Plate recognition can be combined with both barriers and automatic gates. The choice depends on the structure of the entrance and the need.

SituationSuitable solutionPoint to watch
Open car park, frequent vehicle trafficBarrier and plate recognitionFast opening and closing, safety sensors
Complex entrance enclosed by walls and a gateAutomatic gate and plate recognitionGate type, enough room for leaf movement
Entrance with both vehicle and pedestrian trafficBarrier, turnstile and access controlSeparating pedestrian and vehicle paths
Facility receiving heavy vehiclesStrong barrier or industrial gateVehicle size and maneuvering space

At entrances with pedestrian traffic, turnstile and access control systems come into play. If the complex has a walled structure, a leaf gate may suit better than a barrier. This decision is made during the survey by looking at the width of the entrance and the intensity of use.

What to consider in North Cyprus conditions

Cyprus's climate and infrastructure are a test for every electronic system working outdoors.

Heat and direct sun. In summer the camera, control box and motor stay under direct sun. Shading, a ventilated protective box and correct placement extend service life. If sunlight hits the camera directly, plate reading can also suffer; so the camera angle is chosen with the sun's direction during the day in mind.

Dust and dirt. In areas with ongoing construction, dust builds up quickly. A dirty lens lowers reading quality. Regular cleaning and periodic checks are therefore important.

Salty air on the coast. In projects on the coastal side of Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Iskele, Lefke and Güzelyurt, salty humidity stresses metal parts, connection points and the inside of boxes. Near the coast, corrosion-resistant materials and a sealed, protected box should be preferred. Nicosia (Lefkoşa), on the other hand, is inland, so it deals more with dust and heat than salt. For coastal city applications you can also view our Kyrenia (Girne) automatic gate page.

Kıb-Tek power cuts. When the electricity goes out, both the plate recognition system and the barrier stop. A battery backup and the way the system behaves during an outage should be planned in advance. You can find details in our power outage information section. Being able to open the gate manually during an outage is a safety point that must be considered for emergencies.

Warning: Whether the barrier stays open or closed during a Kıb-Tek outage should be decided in advance in terms of entrance security and passage of emergency vehicles. This decision belongs in the design stage, not afterwards.

Factors that affect plate reading

For the system to work properly, the following are assessed during the survey:

  1. Camera position: It should see the plate from a straight angle; a camera looking from too far to the side or too high makes errors.
  2. Vehicle approach pattern: A road where vehicles approach the camera smoothly along the lane without sudden maneuvers is ideal.
  3. Lighting conditions: Sunset, night and oncoming headlights change reading quality.
  4. Plate condition: Dirty, bent or damaged plates may not be read.
  5. Software compatibility with local plates: The software should be tested during installation to confirm it reads the plate formats used on site.
  6. Backup entry method: When the plate cannot be read, there should be a backup route such as a remote, card or operator approval.

None of these items is hard on its own, but if neglected the system gives the impression of "not working". Most complaints actually stem from planning gaps at the installation stage.

Personal data and operating rules

A plate is information that can be linked to a vehicle and therefore often to a person. Before installing the system, management should clarify who will hold the entry records, who can view them and how long they will be kept. For housing complexes the board's decision matters; for hotels and businesses their own internal rules decide. We do not give legal advice on this topic, but putting the rules in writing before the survey reduces disputes after installation.

Preparing for the survey: which questions should you ask?

Thinking about the following questions before the free survey speeds up the process:

  • Is the entrance for vehicles only, or are there pedestrians too?
  • At what hours of the day is it busiest?
  • Who will manage the authorized vehicle list?
  • How will guest and service vehicles be defined?
  • How should the entrance work during a power outage?
  • Is there an existing gate, barrier or camera infrastructure?
  • Are we talking about a location near the coast or inland?

REKA works with all brands; for the brand you want, we contact the manufacturer immediately. So if you prefer a specific brand, just mention it during the survey.

How does the installation process work?

The process generally consists of these steps:

  1. Request and free survey: The entrance is examined on site and needs are noted.
  2. Solution proposal: The camera, software and barrier or gate solution are determined according to the entrance structure.
  3. Installation: The team mounts and connects all components.
  4. Registration and testing: Authorized plates are entered, and opening, closing and safety sensors are tested.
  5. User briefing: Management and users learn how the system is managed.
  6. Maintenance plan: A periodic check schedule is set.

For more on the general flow, see our how it works page. During installation, electrical and mounting work is done by a competent team; we do not recommend attempting these yourself.

Maintenance, warranty and what to do in case of a fault

Because a plate recognition system consists of several components, regular maintenance matters even more. Lens cleaning, connection checks, testing the barrier mechanics and safety sensors, and keeping the plate list in the software up to date are the basics of maintenance.

REKA's warranty is as follows: 3-year warranty; if periodic maintenance is carried out without interruption, the warranty can be extended to up to 5 years. Maintenance is not free of charge; the warranty does not cover maintenance costs. So a user who wants to extend the warranty should have maintenance done regularly.

In case of a fault, the safe checks you can do yourself are limited:

  • Wiping the camera lens or photocell lens with a soft, dry cloth
  • Replacing the remote's battery
  • Checking whether anything on the road blocks the camera's view

Do not touch electrical, wiring or mounting work beyond these. For REKA's 24/7 fault service, visit our maintenance and fault service page.

Tip: Talk to your managers in advance about using the backup entry method so that entry and exit do not stop when a barrier or gate fails.

Which regions do we serve?

Based in Nicosia (Lefkoşa), REKA serves all regions of North Cyprus: Nicosia (Lefkoşa), Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Iskele, Güzelyurt and Lefke. Each region has its own conditions; a coastal hotel car park and a business center entrance in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) may not need the same materials and protection. This difference is taken into account in the survey. Our references include the Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus and the Turkish Peace Forces of Cyprus. With more than 20 years of experience, we are used to planning entrances of different scales. You can reach our other articles on our blog page.

Conclusion: good planning, smooth entry

When placed correctly, a plate recognition system ends remote-control confusion, organizes entrances and makes record keeping easier. But success depends on thinking together about camera position, light, power plan, barrier or gate choice and regular maintenance. Cyprus's heat, dust, salty coastal air and Kıb-Tek outages should be part of this plan from the start.
