Sliding or Swing Gate? A Guide to Choosing Your Garden Gate

Sliding vs double swing automatic gates for villas and detached homes in North Cyprus, compared by space, slope, wind exposure and everyday use. Expert tips.

Sliding or Swing Gate? A Guide to Choosing Your Garden Gate

When planning the entrance to a new villa or detached house, one of the first questions is: sliding gate or double swing gate? Both types can be automated and both can look stylish. However, the dimensions of your entrance, the slope of the ground, wind conditions and your daily habits determine the right choice. In this guide we compare the two gate types for home and villa entrances in North Cyprus.

How does a sliding garden gate work?

A sliding gate opens by rolling on wheels along a track in the ground, moving parallel to the wall. The motor usually sits at one end of the gate, fixed to the ground, and drives a toothed rack attached to the gate.

Key features:

  • It needs no free space in front of or behind it when opening, so it is easy to use even if the distance between the road and the gate is short.
  • It is preferred for sloping entrances, because the gate moves horizontally rather than swinging over the ground.
  • It is less affected by wind than swing gates.

Points to consider:

  • On the side where the gate slides when open, you need a flat, unobstructed wall or area as long as the gate is wide.
  • The track, foundation and level ground are important. Stones, sand and leaves collecting on the track can put strain on the gate.

How does a double swing garden gate work?

A swing gate consists of one or two leaves that open inwards (or, rarely, outwards) on hinges. Each leaf is driven by its own articulated-arm, ram-type or underground motor.

Key features:

  • It offers a classic, symmetrical look and is especially popular with traditional architecture.
  • It needs no ground track, so the driveway looks uninterrupted.
  • No side wall is needed for the gate to slide along.

Points to consider:

  • The area where the leaves open must be kept clear; a parked car or plant pots can stop the gate from opening.
  • On ground that slopes upwards, the leaves may touch the ground while opening.
  • Wide, solid leaves can catch the wind like a sail; in windy areas, the motor and fittings must be chosen more carefully.

Which one, and when?

Choose a sliding gate if:

  1. Your gate opens directly onto the road or a short driveway,
  2. The driveway slopes,
  3. Your area is windy (open land, hilltop homes, the coast),
  4. There is enough space along the wall for the gate to slide.

Choose a double swing gate if:

  1. There is no side space for the gate to slide into,
  2. The driveway is flat and there is plenty of room for the leaves to open,
  3. You want a classic look,
  4. You do not want a track laid in the ground.

Tip: Before deciding, draw on the ground in chalk where the gate will be when open. Seeing the area where the leaves will swing or the wall along which the gate will slide helps you spot obstacles you would face in everyday use.

Points to consider in North Cyprus conditions

  • Coastal areas: Because of the salty air, galvanised or stainless materials and more frequent maintenance are recommended for both types.
  • Dusty areas: In Nicosia (Lefkoşa) and the Mesaoria plain, dust can build up more quickly on sliding gate tracks; regular cleaning is important.
  • Power cuts: Whatever the gate type, a motor with battery backup ensures easy use during outages.

Safety equipment is essential for both types

Whichever gate type you choose, an automatic gate should have the following safety equipment:

  • Photocells that stop the gate when a vehicle or pedestrian is detected while it is moving
  • An obstacle detection setting that stops or reverses the gate when it meets an obstacle
  • A warning light indicating that the gate is moving
  • A manual release mechanism that can be used during a power cut

A site survey makes the right decision

Although the differences between the two gate types look clear on paper, the real decision depends on the measurements on site, the ground and the condition of the walls. As REKA Automatic Building Technologies, we carry out free site surveys for automatic garden gates in all regions of North Cyprus and recommend the best solution for your entrance on site. Our systems come with a 3-year warranty; if periodic maintenance is carried out without interruption, the warranty can be extended to up to 5 years. Frequently asked questions

Which gate is more suitable for a sloping entrance?

Swing gates can scrape the ground when opening on a slope. For such entrances a sliding gate is often more suitable; however, the final decision is made during the site survey based on the ground and space measurements.

Can I convert my existing swing gate into a sliding gate?

Usually a new gate leaf, track and foundation are required. Whether there is enough space along the wall for the gate to slide is checked during the site survey.

Which one is safer?

Both types can be used safely with safety equipment such as photocells and obstacle detection. Safety depends less on the gate type than on correct installation and regular maintenance.
