What is an automatic garden gate and what types are there?
An automatic garden gate is a system that uses a motor and a control board to open and close the gate at the entrance to your garden or complex by remote control, phone or card. Being able to open the gate without getting out of the car is a big convenience, especially on rainy days and at night. In practice we mostly come across two types:
- Sliding gates: The gate moves on a ground track parallel to the wall. This type is usually chosen when there is no room in front of the entrance for gate leaves to swing open, or when the driveway slopes.
- Swing gates (double or single leaf): The leaves open inwards on their hinges. They are common on classic-style villas and narrow entrances. Arm-type or underground (buried) motor options are available.
With either type, if your existing iron or aluminium gate is sound, it can often be converted to a motorised system without replacing the gate.
When choosing the gate type, it is worth thinking not only about how you use it today but also about future changes. For example, if you plan to add a second vehicle entrance to the garden or to automate the pedestrian gate separately, setting up the control board and cabling for this from the start makes later work easier.
Where are they used in North Cyprus?
Because homes in Cyprus are largely houses with gardens, the automatic garden gate is one of the systems we install most often. We install these systems at villas along the Kyrenia (Girne)–Esentepe stretch, at complex entrances on the Iskele and Famagusta (Gazimağusa) coastline, at detached houses in Nicosia (Lefkoşa), and at homes on large plots in Güzelyurt and Lefke. In coastal areas salt and humidity, and inland dust and wind, are factors that directly affect the choice of materials.
How should you choose the right system?
Choosing a gate motor doesn't end with picking a model from a catalogue. During the site survey we go through the following points together:
- Gate weight and material: A heavy wrought-iron gate and a light aluminium gate need motors of different power.
- Frequency of use: An entrance used by a single family and a complex entrance with dozens of cars a day do not work at the same intensity.
- Ground and slope: For sliding systems, the track must sit on level, solid ground.
- Electrical supply: In areas with frequent Kıb-Tek power cuts, we recommend installing a system with battery backup.
- Climate: For homes close to the sea, rust-resistant components and a protected control box should be chosen.
None of these criteria is enough on its own to make a decision; the option that suits you emerges when we consider them all together. During the survey we explain the pros and cons of different brands and models in plain language, so you can make an informed decision. Our main goal is to install a safe, long-lasting system without straining your budget.
Options and accessories
Alongside the basic motor and control board, you can enhance the system to suit your habits:
- Extra remote controls and separate coding for family members
- Module for opening by phone or smart app
- Safety photocells and a flashing lamp that lights while the gate moves
- Card, keypad or video intercom integration
- Battery backup unit that keeps working during power cuts
- Partial opening function for pedestrian access
We work with all brands, including Nice, BFT, FAAC, CAME, Hörmann and Somfy. If you have a particular brand in mind, we source it from Turkey and liaise with that brand's authorised representatives. For more on gates with battery backup, see our battery backup gate systems page.
Installation process: from survey to handover
So that you know every step in advance, here is how we work:
- Survey: We visit your address and inspect the gate, the ground and the power line on site. The survey is free.
- Quote: We prepare a written quote explaining the motor and accessory options that suit you.
- Installation: Once you approve, the motor, track or arms, photocells and control board are installed and the cabling is connected safely.
- Handover: We test the system in front of you, program the remotes and show you how to use it and how to open it manually in an emergency.
Installation time depends on the condition of the gate and any additional work; this is confirmed during the survey. You can find details of each step on our how it works page.
On installation day we make the work area safe and take care to avoid unnecessary damage to your garden and walls. Cables are run through protective conduit wherever possible, and the control box is positioned to be protected from rain and direct sun. We leave the area clean when the job is done.
Maintenance and warranty
For the automatic garden gate systems we install: 3-year warranty; if periodic maintenance is carried out without interruption, the warranty can be extended to up to 5 years. Periodic maintenance includes lubricating the motor, cleaning the track, and checking the photocells and control board. In case of a breakdown you can reach our 24/7 repair service; for details see our maintenance and repair service page.
Maintenance intervals can differ because of salt build-up in coastal areas and dust inland. On the first maintenance visit we assess your gate's environment and how heavily it is used, and suggest a maintenance schedule that suits you. Fixing small issues spotted during maintenance before they grow is the most practical way to prevent sudden breakdowns.
