What is a cold room door, and what types are there?
A cold room door is a special door made from insulated panels and fitted with high-performance seals to keep the cold air inside. The main types, by use:
- Hinged cold room doors: The common solution for small and medium cold rooms and restaurant kitchens.
- Sliding cold room doors: Preferred for wide-opening stores and pallet truck or forklift traffic; can be manual or motorised.
- Freezer doors: Prevent icing with heated frames and special seals.
- High-speed roll-up doors and PVC strip curtains: An additional solution to reduce cold loss in high-traffic areas.
How well a cold room door performs depends largely on the condition of its seals and closing mechanism. However good the door, one that doesn't close fully or has worn seals lets cold air escape constantly. That is why the precision of installation matters as much as the choice of door.
Where they are used in North Cyprus
Hotel kitchens and stores in Kyrenia (Girne), Iskele and the Bafra area, supermarkets, butchers and wholesalers in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) and Famagusta (Gazimağusa), and citrus and agricultural produce stores in Güzelyurt are where cold room doors are used most. In the hot Cypriot summer, if a cold room door doesn't close properly the refrigeration system runs constantly, energy consumption rises and product quality is put at risk.
In restaurant and hotel kitchens, cold rooms are opened many times a day; being able to open and close the door while carrying things speeds up the workflow. That is why elbow- or foot-operated handles, pull-cord automatic opening or sensor-activated motorised systems are often preferred in these areas.
What to consider when choosing
- Room type: Chilled or frozen storage? This determines panel and seal choice.
- How people pass through: Do staff walk through by hand, or are pallet trucks or forklifts used?
- Frequency of use: For frequently opened doors, a motorised sliding system with automatic closing reduces cold loss.
- Hygiene: Easy-to-clean surfaces and stainless details are preferred in food areas.
- Safety: There must always be an inside release mechanism in case someone is trapped inside.
- Power cuts: Plan for the motorised door to be opened by hand during a Kıb-Tek power cut and, if needed, battery backup.
Options and accessories
- Motorised sliding system, opening by pull cord, radar or push button
- Frame heaters (for freezer rooms)
- Vision panel and interior lighting connection
- Impact protection profiles
- Use together with PVC strip curtains and air curtains

Panel thickness and the room's structure are important when choosing the right door for your existing cold room. If a new cold room is being built, planning the door together with the refrigeration company prevents later incompatibility. Where needed, we coordinate with the company installing the refrigeration system.
Installation process
- Site survey: We inspect the cold room's panel structure, door opening and usage flow on site.
- Quote: We provide door type, panel, seal and motor options in writing.
- Installation: We plan the work in coordination with your business so that your products are not affected.
- Handover: Seal and closing tests are carried out and the inside release mechanism is demonstrated.
Details of our workflow are on our how it works page.
When a cold room door is replaced, products may need to be moved temporarily to another chiller. We therefore set the installation day together according to your stock levels and delivery schedule, and focus on completing the work as quickly as possible.
Maintenance and warranty
Worn seals and hinges or tracks going out of adjustment are the most common problems with cold room doors; they cause energy loss without being noticed. For the doors we install: 3-year warranty; if periodic maintenance is carried out without interruption, the warranty can be extended to up to 5 years. If your door won't close, your products are at risk; you can call our 24/7 breakdown service.
At maintenance visits we check seal flexibility, hinge and track adjustment, the lock and inside release mechanism and, in freezer rooms, that the frame heaters are working. These checks keep energy consumption in balance and protect your staff.
