What is a revolving door and how does it work?
A revolving door consists of leaves that rotate around a central axis, and thanks to the compartments formed between the leaves, the inside and outside are never fully open to each other at any moment. This makes it easier to keep wind, dust and outside air out. The main types are:
- Three-leaf revolving doors: A common solution for entrances with moderate traffic.
- Four-leaf revolving doors: Provide a classic look and a balanced flow of people.
- Two-leaf wide revolving doors: Offer wide compartments suitable for passing with luggage, pushchairs and wheelchairs; often chosen by hotels.
- Power-assisted and fully automatic models: Systems where the motor assists as the user pushes, or that rotate by themselves via a sensor.
The speed of a revolving door can be adjusted to the user profile. A hotel with many elderly guests or families with children may prefer a slower, gentler rotation, while business centres can use settings that speed up the flow. In all models, sensors stop the rotation when the leaves meet an obstacle.
Which buildings use them in North Cyprus?
Large hotels in the Kyrenia (Girne) and Bafra areas, business centres and banks in Nicosia (Lefkoşa), and university and hospital buildings in Famagusta (Gazimağusa) are where revolving doors stand out. On coastal façades exposed to strong winds, ordinary sliding doors open and close frequently and the interior quickly heats up or cools down; a revolving door helps reduce this loss. Hotel operators also value the aesthetic character it adds to the lobby.
In public buildings and hospitals, a revolving door creates a controlled flow at the entrance and makes the security staff's job easier. To prevent crowds building up in front of the door at peak times, side passages and the waiting area should be planned together with the door.
What to consider at the project stage
- Building entrance architecture: A revolving door needs a certain diameter and ceiling height, so preliminary work is done on the architectural drawings.
- Traffic volume and user profile: A hotel with guests carrying luggage and an office building need different leaf layouts.
- Side escape door: An automatic sensor door or swing door next to the revolving door is recommended for emergencies and moving goods.
- Safety scenarios: Night locking, leaves folding away in an emergency and anti-trap sensors are assessed.
- Power continuity: A battery backup control unit should be considered so that the door stops safely or can be turned by hand during Kıb-Tek power cuts.
Options
- Glass, stainless steel or painted frame options
- Lighting recessed into the door canopy
- Digital adjustment of speed and rotation modes
- Card access and night lock system
- Combined entrance design with an automatic sensor door alongside
- Turnstiles and access control integration for building entry control
When the frame and leaf materials are chosen to match the building's façade design, the revolving door becomes the focal point of the entrance area. When choosing between stainless steel, painted aluminium or all-glass designs, ease of maintenance and, in coastal areas, corrosion resistance should also be taken into account.
Installation process
- Survey and preliminary design: We inspect the entrance area on site and assess suitability using the architectural plan.
- Quote: We prepare a quote explaining the leaf layout, frame material and automation options.
- Installation: Floor preparation, frame installation, leaves and motor unit are installed in turn. We plan the work to disrupt the building's use as little as possible.
- Handover: Speed, safety sensors and emergency functions are tested; building staff are trained in its use.

Maintenance and warranty
Revolving doors are constantly moving, heavily used systems; periodic checks of the bearings, brushes and sensors are essential for safe operation. For the revolving doors we install: 3-year warranty; if periodic maintenance is carried out without interruption, the warranty can be extended to up to 5 years. For hotels that want to plan maintenance before the season, we suggest a regular visit schedule; in emergencies our 24/7 repair service is at your disposal.
On maintenance visits, the balance of the leaves, the condition of the floor brushes, the motor and gears, and the sensors' detection area are each tested. Worn brushes let more wind and dust through, reducing the advantage a revolving door provides, so we recommend replacing these parts in good time.
